Home made Naan Bread

My favourite food has got to be curry – anytime, anywhere! The only thing that makes curry better is a yummy warm Naan bread. I got this recipe online a few years ago and its really easy to make. I make them whilst the curry is on the hob reducing down. I also got an iron baking stone for Christmas this year which makes grilling the Naan’s even easier. You can add any extra’s you want like garlic, coriander etc but I’ve kept mine simple with butter, milk and coriander. Hope you enjoy!

  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon caster sugar
  • 1 & 1/2 teaspoons of dried yeast
  • 4 tablespoons of natural yoghurt
  • 50g of melted butter or margarine
  •  450g strong plain flour
  • 200ml lukewarm milk
  1. Beat egg with salt, baking powder, sugar, yeast, yoghurt and half of the butter. (Make sure the butter cools a little before adding it otherwise you’ll get scrambled egg!)
  2. Stir in the flour and add milk gradually ( I always find there’s too much milk and the dough ends up sticky so I use the left over milk with the melted butter for brushing the tops of the bread before grilling)
  3. Knead until smooth and cover and leave in a warm place until doubled in size.
  4. Knead for a minute.
  5. Divide into 6 balls – flatten and roll balls into tear drop shapes abut 5mm thick. Leave for 5 – 10 minutes.
  6. Brush with the remaining butter and milk (and coriander – dried is fine) and grill for 2 minutes on each side until puffed up and slightly brown.
